Norman Stewart’s father’s family came from Lewis and he spent much of his youth in Tain, in Easter Ross. Later, after travelling, he returned to the Highlands and stayed at Whitebrige near Inverness during the late 1970s early 1980s, During this time he was often to be found in Tain.
Norman formed the band Iolair with Janice Clark, Duncan MacGillivray and, for a short time, Christine Martin. Norman, Janice and Christine played on the 1980 album Iolair but by that time Duncan had joined Battlefield Band.
The following solo tracks were recorded in 1987 at The Proles Pleasure Studios in Tain by Terry B Small for Taigh na Teud Music Publishers and released on the cassette album The North Highland Tradition – Gaidhealtachd A’ Tuath. A book of collected songs Folk Songs from the Highlands by Norman Stewart, including the songs on the album, was produced in 1989.
