Son of raretunes artist Walter Dale who was active from the 1930s onwards. As a youth the worked in New York with the famous Logan family of variety artists.

A person communication from Buddy Logan c. 1982 noted “1930s went to New York with Logan Family sponsored by Bill Marshall, painter and decorator who inherited money… he [Dale] fell out with the family and on his return c. 1937 joined Douglas, Dex and Dale (piano, sax and concertina) which had some success on the Scottish circuit.”
